A large pile of roof shingles, dumped illegally on the Coconino National Forest in the Red Rock Ranger District, were cleaned up.

An area contractor recently came forward and admitted involvement in the dump after reading about the crime in the Sedona Red Rock News.

The shingles, according to Red Rock Ranger District Spokeswoman Connie Birkland, were dumped by a subcontractor hired by the contractor. Names have not been released as of yet pending formal charges.

The workers who dumped the shingles cleaned the site Saturday, July 21, though that contractor is still required to make a mandatory appearance before a judge.

“We don’t know what the judge will say. Is there a fine? Is there a sentence? We don’t know,” Birkland said. “Being cooperative sometimes makes a difference, and they did clean it up.”
