Twelve years ago, the city began discussing the creation of a Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park at Posse Grounds Park. During the Wednesday, June 12, Sedona City Council meeting, the discussion continued.

The Sedona City Council discussed possible actions on how to proceed with the Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park on Wednesday, June 12. After the collapse of the dome last year, the city has re-examined building a stage at the site. The council voted to move ahead with the project, which came to a halt last summer following the collapse of the pavilion dome — the centerpiece of the park. In March, city staff was directed to come up with a variety of options in order to proceed with the park’s creation.

The council was presented with four plans, with a majority vote choosing the fourth option. In it, staff will send out a Request for Proposal to area architects and designers for submission of concept plans based on the council’s selected design elements and other specific criteria for the park. The submitted concepts would then be given a public review and comment period and a review by the city. Then, similar to the art for the roundabouts, the public would be asked to vote on which design they liked best.

“I’m not optimistic this will occur while any of us are on the council,” Vice Mayor Mark DiNunzio said, which got a laugh from the crowd. “But we need to move forward with something that will satisfy the user and the community.”
