People who took part in the Community Campout at Sunset park on Friday, June 7, had an opportunity to see local illusionist Magical Michael’s repertoire of tricks. Magical Michael — aka Michael Steele — has been practicing magic in the Verde Valley and abroad for more than 30 years, and he still finds joy in entertaining kids of all ages.

Magical Michael Steele performs at Sunset Park on Friday, June 7. Steele will perform at the Kids and Kritters Summer Camp, Friday, June 14, at the Humane Society of Sedona.“I got into magic when I was about 13 years old. I learned a couple of tricks, and having a lot of time to myself ... I would learn more tricks and add them to my repertoire and got better and better,” Steele said. “After college is when I turned professional. I’ve always done a lot of things, and magic is a part of it.”

What might be surprising is that Steele is also an educator, working as a full-time teacher for more than a decade while also working as a substitute and private tutor. Steele’s early experience as an educator saw him teaching at a private school run out of a bus during the early 1970s.
