It’s known as “America’s Most Scenic Airport.” Sitting at an elevation of 4,830 feet, the 220-acre Sedona Airport has earned that nickname for good reason. But General Manager Rob Propst wants the airport to be known for more than just a pretty place to land.

A Sikorsky S-64 “Skycrane” descends at the Sedona Airport to fuel up to fight fires Friday, June 28. This Sikorsky helicopter was stationed in Flagstaff and has been fighting the Doce Fire near Prescott and other fires in Arizona. Propst, who started the job earlier this year, gave an update on the airport to the Sedona City Council on June 26. He said the land the airport sits on is owned by Yavapai County which holds a long-term lease. The airport is surrounded by noise-sensitive areas, which is why pilots are asked to climb as quickly as possible to minimize noise and to avoid flying over housing areas.

Like the vast majority of airports, Sedona does not have a tower with air traffic controllers. In fact, only 400 of the nation’s 19,000 airports have towers, Propst said. Despite recent talk of Sedona getting a tower, Propst quickly put that rumor to rest by saying, “This is never going to happen. We would never meet the standards for a tower.”

Have noticed significant improvement in "noise", coming from aircraft, and helicopter "fly-overs", which is to the good, and much appreciated.. However, it appears the airport is in the business now of renting out space, sounds like for wedding receptions, parties, etc. No one living near airport is interested in listening to that nuisance/racket over loudspeakers.
