Emergency alertMany Sedona residents received a different kind of text message on Thursday, July 11, at 5:24 p.m., when they looked at their beeping, ringing or vibrating phones and saw an AMBER — America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response — Alert.

“The AMBER Alert Plan was created as a powerful legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman who was kidnapped and murdered in Arlington, Texas,” the Arizona Department of Public Safety said on its website. “As a result of Amber’s murder, the Dallas/Fort Worth Association of Radio Managers teamed up with local law enforcement in northern Texas and developed this innovative early warning system to help find abducted children. Already the AMBER Plan has assisted in the speedy recovery of a number of children.”

AMBER Alerts have become a valuable and commonly used tool in the United States, but in recent memory they used — as spelled out in the AMBER Alert Plan — the use of radio and television broadcasts; using cellular devices, meanwhile, appears to be a new trend ....
