ADOT delays SR 89A lights

The issue of ADOT installing lights in West Sedona has been delayed.

The Arizona Department of Transportation wants more information before putting the West Sedona streetlights issue back into its five-year plan.

The streetlights were among one of many items in the five-year plan at ADOT’s January statewide transportation board meeting.

Several opponents to the lights traveled to the meeting in Casa Grande to give testimony and views on whether they are needed in West Sedona.

adot-logoADOT Public Involvement Director Teresa Welborn said the lighting issue in Sedona was tabled in January, but it will be coming up again for discussion.

The transportation board voted 3-2 to not include it in its plan at this time because it would like more information by its Wednesday, Feb. 3, study session meeting.

The earliest the light issue could be put back into the construction phase of the plan would be Wednesday, Feb. 17, since this is the meeting in February where the board can take action.

Welborn said there were six projects in the priority planning committee and the board pulled the Sedona lights off the list to discuss it.

After the discussion, a motion was made to approve putting all six projects, including the West Sedona lights into the five-year plan. The motion failed by a 3-2 vote.

Welborn said the project is still very much in play and will be discussed again in about a week.

“The project is tabled,” she said. “They asked for more information at the Feb. 3 meeting and will discuss whether to put it back [into the five-year] agenda.”

She stressed the 3-2 vote in no way is a sign the ADOT board is opposed to or favors lights in West Sedona, adding it just wants additional information.
