Local author and hiker Brian J. Lane saw a hole in the book industry devoted to hiking guides, and decided to fill it. “I looked at all the guides out there, and the maps are awful or they underestimate the length of time it takes to hike a trail. They don’t have a lot of good pictures,” he said. “A lot of them are very general books; I thought it should be more specific.” The book proved to be a hit, earning a Benjamin Franklin Award from the Independent Book Publisher’s Association, and gaining the attention of a publisher who picked up “Hikernut’s Grand Canyon Companion” for a new edition. Citing a lack of detailed, user-friendly guides to the Grand Canyon, the Massachusetts native set about turning his experiences in the canyonlands into the very thing he felt other hikers of all skill levels would appreciate and find useful, and self-published his first book, “Hikernut’s Grand Canyon Companion” in 2007.
