Two Sedona men were sentenced in Federal Magistrate Court on March 5 for unauthorized trail construction on the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest.

In the past year, the U.S. Forest Service has helped convict five people for similar offenses of unauthorized trail construction on national forest land near Sedona. One of those cited, David Donohue, 40, said it took the U.S. Forest Service 16 months to issue him a citation. Donohue was initially contacted by USFS Law Enforcement Officer Mike O’Neil in October 2011 as he was adding dirt a landing to soften it.

“I was out at Beaverhead Flat. It had a history as being an area to go jump — there’s a lot of jumps out there — and I was actually practicing a new trick on one of the jumps,” Donohue said. “I was softening the landing up because I kept falling when I was landing. That’s when the officer walked up the trail and saw me.”
