Big Park girls beat Camp Verde to remain undefeated

The Big Park Community School girls basketball players held on to their perfect record while making a little bit of history while playing their biggest rival.

Both teams were undefeated coming into the game, but Big Park came out on top defeating the Cowboys 39-7. The Big Park girls will take on Beaver Creek at home on Tuesday, Dec. 11. The Coyotes traveled to Camp Verde Middle School on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and took control over the Cowboys on the court early.

Both teams came into the game undefeated, but Big Park won 39-7 after holding the Cowboys to zero points in the first half making them the first team ever to do that in the history of Camp Verde girls basketball.

“The girls were nervous. Camp Verde beat us last year,” Kirk Westervelt, Big Park’s head coach said. “Our girls competed, played hard, and that’s all we ask them to do.”

Sophia Perry was the leading scorer of the night with 11 points followed by Liza Westervelt and Maddy Ninneman with eight points each.

The game started with aggressive play and high intensity particularly from Big Park. Taylor Ryan and Nikki Zielinski blocked Cowboys shots, the Coyotes recorded some steals, and Big Park played a full-court press grabbing the ball every chance it got.

Camp Verde was strong on defense too as the first Coyotes basket didn’t happen until two minutes were left in the first quarter. Perry scored two easy baskets from under the net with
