Girls posting mixed results early in the season

The Scorpions stung their opponents with dominating wins in the first two games of the season and put up a good fight against one of the toughest teams in the division above them.

The Scorpions blew out the Spartans 76-9 and are now 2-2 on the season. The girls’ next home game will be a rematch against the Prescott Badgers on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m.The Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team, now 2-2, beat the Chino Valley Cougars [1-3] 66-22 and the Northland Prep Spartans [0-3] 76-9 and lost by four points to the Prescott Badgers [7-3] 61-57 and by 10 points against the Bradshaw Mountain Bears [6-1].

“The girls are starting to play defense pretty hard, which is the key,” said Jackie Strickling, the Scorpions’ head coach. “If they can play defense this hard every game, we’re in any game.”

The girls showcased their strong defense and offense in the game against Northland Prep at home on Thursday, Dec. 6.

Junior Zhara Laster was the leading scorer with 22 points and 10 steals. Junior Amber Rippy had 21 points. Senior Tiana Hatler had eight points and seven rebounds while sophomore Storm Laster had six points.

Hatler, Rippy, Zhara Laster, Mary Kate Hafner and Sierra Hatler were the game’s starters for the Scorpions.

Hatler won the tipoff, tipping it to Laster. The Scorpions passed the ball around to set up the play until Hafner was able to get a shot in with an assist by Rippy.

The Spartans tied it up 2-2 off of two free throws, but shots by Hafner and Rippy and layups by Laster gave the Scorpions the lead. Long passes by the Hatler twins to Rippy under the basket put the Scorpions up 16-3.
