Bright yellow shirts are becoming a familiar sight in Uptown

Sedona Community Service Aides Bill Melton, right, and Gene Kurz enforce parking rules in Uptown on Saturday, Nov. 3. So far, the aides are writing warnings for parking violators to help spread the word to the public about the new enforcement. Within the next two weeks, however, they will begin giving citations for parking violations. The city of Sedona’s new community service aides, formed as part of the Sedona Police Department, have made their presence known in the area. The aides, while currently issuing warnings on weekends and on days with heavy traffic, will soon be issuing citations as well.

The part-time positions were created in an effort to help alleviate traffic congestion and other issues, particularly in Uptown.

While there are three community service aides employed on a part-time basis, SPD is currently seeking to hire a fourth aide as well, SPD Cmdr. Ron Wheeler said.

“We have opened it up to a fourth. We’re taking applications right now,” Wheeler said.

The three current aides have been trained by the department’s motor and traffic officer and currently issue warnings to vehicles in the area.
