Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced Friday, Jan. 19, that in the event of a federal government shutdown, the state of Arizona is prepared to provide resources to keep the Grand Canyon open. The state is partnering in this effort with the National Park Service, with help from Arizona State Parks and Trails and the Arizona Office of Tourism.

Congress failed to reach a budget deal by midnight Jan. 19 to keep the federal government open. 

A 15-year-old boy was rescued from the south aspect of Capitol Butte aka Thunder Mountain -- which is located immediately north of Sedona city limits -- by the Yavapai County Search and Rescue Team Back Country Unit aided by a DPS Ranger Helicopter on Thursday, Jan. 11, at approximately 7:45 a.m.

The teen left home alone the day prior, Wednesday, Jan. 10, at approximately 9 a.m., wearing only a small backpack with minimal water and food, leggings, shorts a hooded sweater, baseball cap and running shoes. His intention was to summit Capitol Butte, a long-time goal.

Oak Creek Canyon was closed on State Route 89A at milepost 377 to the Rainbow Trout Farm from 4:15 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5. Law enforcement responded to a call of shots fired around 4:15 p.m. The FBI was been called to the scene because the incident happened on federal land. According to sources, a female U.S. Forest Service employee was involved in the incident. The FBI has reportedly identified the suspect as Tyler Miller, 51, of Hutchinson, Kansas.

The death of four members of an El Mirage family over the New Year’s weekend is a reminder of how deadly carbon monoxide poisoning can be and why fire offi­cials are quick to remind residents of those dangers.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office reported that on Monday, Jan. 1, deputies responded to a residence in Parks, between Flagstaff and Williams, for a welfare check and discovered the deceased bodies of two adults and two young children.

The public is invited to come and discuss a proposed sales tax increase that would help cover traffic mitigation projects over the next decade.
The Sedona City Council will hold a public hearing followed by possible action regarding an ordinance amending the city’s tax code to temporarily increase the Transaction Privilege Tax by one-half percent. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in council chambers.
