The Sedona-Oak Creek School District had one of its first strategic planning committee meetings Nov. 2. The committee, led by education consultant Don Groves, will spend the next months reviewing district data and listening to community input in the first phase of drafting a strategic plan for the school district.

The committee discussed the three main categories of its data gathering efforts: Community input, educational future forecasting and a catchall category for data that doesn’t fit in the other two categories.

After several months of discussion, debate and accusations that often turned personal, a proposed bond for improvements to the Sedona Fire District failed to pass.

The Tuesday, Nov. 7, election results for a proposed $17.9 million bond saw 3,337 [56.27 percent] residents vote against it while 2,593 [43.73 percent] were in favor.

Stories about small towns seem to resonate more when they’re told in a small town. Almost, Maine, may be a mite smaller than Sedona — also, it’s fictional — but its residents express sentiments about smalltown living that Sedona Red Rock High School’s students surely relate to.

The Red Rock Players — the high school’s theater group — will perform “Almost, Maine” Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 9 through 12. It’s a play of short stories: Eight 10-orso minute vignettes, plus a prologue, interlogue and epilogue, that explore love and loss.

In early October, the Arizona Board of Education presented its preliminary grades for the state’s schools, which assesses schools on an A to F scale in an effort to promote accountability and growth.

Sedona Charter School earned a B, which, according to the board’s website, means the school has “high performance on statewide assessment and/or significant student growth.”
