Two loud pops raised eyebrows in the neighborhoods around Sedona City Hall the evening of Thursday, Nov. 1.
The booms, according to Sedona Police Department Police Chief Ray Cota, originated from a training exercise for students enrolled in city of Sedona’s eight-week Citizens Police Academy.
Cota said the academy teaches specifics on the activities and operations of SPD.
“On Nov. 1, we had the Verde Valley Regional SWAT team come in and talk to the academy about their role and responsibilities in providing services to Sedona. Part of that presentation was a demonstration of a couple of non-projectile ordinances,” Cota said.
SWAT fired blanks from weapons as part of the demonstration, creating the noise heard by neighbors.
Weather may have made the recent evening demonstration louder than expected, Sedona Assistant City Manager Karen Daines said.
