The Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team continued its undefeated streak to open its power-point game schedule with a 6-0 win at Santa Cruz Valley High School on Thursday, Jan. 4.
Four different goal scorers propelled the Scorpions over the Dust Devils. Red Rock had beaten a shorthanded Santa Cruz Valley 10-1 on Dec. 11.
“They played strong and it was a long trip,” Scorpions head coach Juan Carlos Aguilar said. “I’m happy with the performance. The defense is still strong and we played more organized.”
The Scorpions, who debuted at No. 15 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association Conference 3A poll, have won three of four power-point games. The fourth was a 0-0 tie with River Valley High School on Dec. 19, when the teams agreed to not play overtime in order to travel home and study for finals.
On Jan. 4, senior midfielder Alicia Pallares and junior forward Braeden Feldtkeller scored two each while sophomore forward Amari Sonn and sophomore forward Carolina Lopez-Villegas had one.
Aguilar said the warm temperatures in Eloy, at around 75 degrees, had the girls laboring in the first half against a Dust Devils team that this time had 11 players.
In the second half play picked up, and he said his team spent most of the game attacking in Santa Cruz Valley’s half of the field. He was most happy with the Scorpions’ organization, the way the players work together and move up and down the field.
One area of improvement still is the speed with which the team attacks.
After traveling to Wickenburg High School on Wednesday, Jan. 10, the Scorpions have a week to prepare for their 3A Region 1 opener against Veritas Preparatory Academy Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. at home.
That week between games, Aguilar said, will be important to work on getting out and attacking as well as letting the girls rest and get healthy.
The team played against the NFL YET College Prep Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 9, winning 3-1. It beat NFL YET 4-0 in their first matchup of the year on Dec. 14.
The boys team took on Tonopah Valley High School on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in a rematch from its first game of the season, a 2-1 loss. It went down 2-0 inside the first 10 minutes of the Jan. 9 match, eventually losing 8-1.
The Scorpions won a goal-scoring clinic, 7-6, at Wickenburg on Wednesday, Jan. 10, before continuing their 3A Region 1 schedule Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m., at home against Veritas Prep.
