The Sedona Red Rock High boys cross country team finished second in the seven-team regional meet, while the girls finished third at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott on Saturday, Oct. 28.
Glenn Sapp led the charge, finishing first with a course record 17:55 in the 3.2-mile race. Freshman Jesus Rivera was close, finishing third in 18:45. Chris Lloyd was eighth, and Garret Debbs was 18th.
On the girls’ side, Beatrice Sapienza was sixth, and Lydia Mosley was 13th.
Top five placers on both sides received all-region first team awards, while five through 15 finishers received second team all-region awards.
The cross country team will participate in the state meet at the Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix on Saturday, Nov. 4. Sedona hopes to beat Chino Valley High, who finished ahead of Sedona in both sides of the regional tournament at state.
Cindy Patterson supplied a tent to the team, for which the SRRHS runners thank her.
The girls volleyball season ended when the girls lost to Wickenburg High on Saturday, Oct. 28, in five sets. Sedona won the first and third games 26-24, 23-25, 26-24, 20-25 and 12-15. If the girls had won, they would have qualified for the regional and state tournaments.
“Everybody gave all the heart they had,” Head Coach John Parks said.
In a contest that lasted nearly three hours, Sedona players played as hard and competitively as they had all season.
“It was extremely intense. I can’t describe how hard they played,” Parks said.
At least seven spots appear open next year on the varsity squad — a good sign for a team that has talent coming up.
“We have a lot of good freshmen down there,” Parks said.
