Village of Oak Creek resident Judy Strubbe stares at a giant drill when she walks out her front door.
The drill has been there for the past three months, according to Strubbe.
Why the drill is there and how much longer it will sit at the corner of White Tail Drive and Bell Rock Boulevard are just a few questions Strubbe has.
Arizona Water Company, which Strubbe said is drilling the well, did not return numerous Larson Newspapers phone calls over several days.
Neither AWC Sedona Division Manager Lee Hetrick or AWC Superintendent Keith Self were available to offer any information regarding the well.
AWC subcontracted Layne Christensen Company from Chandler to operate the drill. A representative from Layne Christensen wasn’t available for comment either.
Driving down Bell Rock Boulevard, the work site is impossible to miss.
From the top of the drill, an American flag flaps in the breeze.
The base of the drill is hidden by a tall fabric fence encircling the work area.
Strubbe said it’s probably to muffle the noise.
A sign that reads, “Hard Hat Area,” hangs at the entrance to the fence.
Strubbe said workers man the drill 24 hours a day except holidays.
According to Strubbe, people living in the area weren’t warned about the project or offered any information regarding its purpose.
All Strubbe relies on is hearsay.
“Everybody’s curious,” Strubbe said.
Rumors float up and down White Tail Drive, passed house to house, with nobody to confirm or discredit the tidbits of information.
So, for now, the questions of Strubbe and her neighbors remain unanswered.
