By saving four match points, Graham Greenfield saved the day for the Scorpions.

The Sedona Red Rock High boys tennis team defeated top rival Seton Catholic High 5-4 on Thursday, April 19, to repeat as co-conference champions of the 3A West.

The boys were down 3-2 going into Greenfield?s singles match. Greenfield split the first two sets and was down 7-3 in the tie-breaker.

A loss would have forced SRRHS to sweep the doubles matches where SCHS has the No. 1 doubles teams in the state.

Greenfield came through, saving four match points from the No. 5 position before winning the third match tie-breaker 13-11.

?I will tell you one thing, it was exciting,? Head Coach and U.S. Professional Tennis Association Master Professional Larry Lineberry said.

There was much more to celebrate.

Before Greenfield?s comeback, No. 1 singles player Luke Dumyahn overcame his nemesis, 3A singles state champion and four-time winner against Dumyahn Joe Juliano.

Dumyahn won in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3 for his first career victory against Juliano.

?I am not going to lie, playing on the clay courts helped,? the self-effacing Dumyahn said.

Dumyahn has had his eye on Juliano since last year, and with the help of his coaching staff, he created a game plan to expose Juliano?s few weaknesses.

?He [Dumyahn] was very consistent and tactically attacked his opponent?s back-hand at very smart times in the match,? Lineberry said.

For as much as what Dumyahn did against Juliano, it?s what he didn?t do that he had done previously that was most important this time around.

Dumyahn resisted pulling the trigger too often on his kill shots.

?I didn?t force any big shots until I knew I had them. I didn?t really make any big errors,? Dumyahn said.

Breaking through against Juliano gives Dumyahn the confidence for what seems to be inevitable third and fourth matches between the two, one at regionals and a second at state.

?I know I can beat him and I have a little underdog position still on the hard-court,? Dumyahn said.

Dumyahn?s doubles partner Andy Swartwout at the No. 3 singles position continued his stalwart play, winning against SCHS in the No. 2 singles spot 6-1, 6-0.

?He?s had a great year and remains undefeated on the season. He has a great chance of making the state tournament,? Lineberry said.

Daniel Juda and Nick Reynolds won their doubles match 8-2, while Greenfield and Luke Keckeis put away the contest in the final doubles pairing 8-3.

Dumyahn and Swartwout will represent SRRHS in singles while Juda, Reynolds, Keckeis and Greenfield will represent doubles in the upcoming individual regionals match at Chandler Tennis Center on Friday, April 28.

A coin flip with Seton Catholic will decide SRRHS? seed in the state tournament, which will begin Wednesday, May 2. A winning flip means a No. 1 seed and will give the Scorpion?s a first-round home match.

SRRHS also defeated Flagstaff High 9-0 and Fountain Hills High 7-2 last week.

The girls lost to FHS and SCHS 4-5 but defeated FHHS 7-2.

Madlen Monien lost her first match of the season against SCHS, mostly due to a knee injury. Depending on the severity of her knee injury, Monien will represent the Scorpions as a singles player in the upcoming regional event.

Ayerin Gonzalez-Gamboa will also represent SRRHS in singles, while a combination that should include Kayla Karp, Tori Talkington and Sara Beckwith will represent SRRHS in doubles, all dependent on Monien?s injury.
