Take away the guns, the leather and the cowboy hats from the famous shoot out at the O.K. Corral, which took place in Tombstone, Ariz., more than a century ago, and replace them with a pigskin football, shoulder pads and a helmet. You might come close to what happened in Sedona Friday, Sept. 7.
Of course nobody died in the football game, but defenses for both teams certainly took a beating, giving up 76 total points in 48 minutes of play.
The Sedona Red Rock High football team hosted the Camp Verde High Cowboys in an old fashion shoot out between the goal posts.
The two offenses put up 11 touchdowns and more then 700 yards combined as Camp Verde came out on top, defeating Sedona, 49-27.
The loss drops Sedona’s record to 0-3 [0-0] on the season.
“Our offense was OK, but our defense just couldn’t stop anybody,” Sedona head coach Brian Batty said.
After the first quarter was over, the Cowboys led 8-0 after wide out Seth Mosley scored a touchdown.
Let the scoring begin.
In the second quarter, 34 of the 76 points were scored,
with Camp Verde claiming 20, and Sedona 14.
Sedona tailback Tyler Horchak scored a rushing touchdown, and quarterback Sammy Holeyfield completed a pass to Jordan Burke for another.
After the completion by Holeyfield in the second quarter, Sedona was down 21-14.
Holeyfield, who has struggled mightily this season, looked much better and more comfortable this time around for the Scorpions.
“Sammy [Holeyfield] looked good out there. He made a couple of nice reads and his throwing on the run is improving,” Batty said.
Holeyfield completed 10 of 20 passes for 95 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
The Scorpions also put together a nice attack on the ground against Camp Verde, rushing for more than 180 yards and a touchdown.
“Tyler [Horchak] gave us everything he had. He ran much harder tonight. You never question his effort,” Batty said.
With the offense clicking, the defense for the Scorpions did not.
Sedona allowed 437 total yards of offense against Camp Verde, not to mention a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by William Trahin.
The return came right after Sedona scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring them closer and make it a two possession game, 36-21.
With the return, it was now a 42-21 game.
Chris Kamas’ touchdown catch in the fourth quarter would keep hopes alive for Sedona and make it a 42-27 affair.
Those hopes grew even larger at the 7:09 mark in the fourth quarter as Trahin fumbled the ball and Horchak recovered it for a Sedona first down.
The Scorpions put a few plays together, but wide out Ben Fazekas bobbled a pitch on a fourth down reverse play and Camp Verde recovered.
Cowboys tailback Damien Baca sealed the deal for Camp Verde after a 1 yard touchdown run to put his team up for good, 49-27.
In preparation for the home game against River Valley on Friday, Sept. 14, Batty elected to overhaul his defensive scheme.
“I think we need to go to a 4-4 set on defense. We did it a little last season, and I think we can be successful with it,” Batty said.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
