The Sedona Fire District responded to a house fire at 49 Prochnow Road at 9:17 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 19.

Twenty firefighters and support staff responded, putting the fire out in 40 minutes and containing damage to approximately $75,000 on the home which is valued at $340,000.

Quick work by the fire district limited structural damage to the attic. The house was unoccupied and unfurnished at the time of the fire.

The house was for sale and owners expected to close escrow pending an inspection which took place earlier in the morning.

It is suspected that the furnace malfunctioned after being fired up for the inspection, according to SFD Fire Marshal Will Loesche.

“As it stands, the initial evidence is pointing to the furnace,” said Gary Johnson, SFD deputy fire marshal and public information officer. “There are a few more questions to be asked, including who was the last person in the house. And, tomorrow the insurance company’s fire investigator will come to take a look.”

The private fire investigator for the insurance company declined to comment.

According to Coconino County records, the 2,000-square-foot house was built in 1969. The home is owned by Homer and Marsha Marcie.

The owners nor the real estate agent could be reached for comment prior to press time.
