Exactly three weeks ago, the girls basketball team at Sedona Red Rock High was struggling to find an identity having just lost to Monument Valley High to drop its record to 3-8 [0-1] on the season.
Since then, the Scorpions have won five of their last seven games including back-to-back 3A-West region games this past weekend to improve their record to 8-10 [2-1] on the season.
“We may be finally starting to put some things together,” Sedona head coach John Cunningham said.
The wins haven’t come easy.
After playing five games in two days and going 3-2 at the Yvonne Johnson Memorial Shootout the last weekend of 2007, Sedona played host to Estrella Foothills High on Friday, Jan. 4, and didn’t disappoint.
Junior point guard Breanne Cunningham scored 12 points while collecting five rebounds, five steals and two assists in her team’s 46-21 victory over the 3A-West regional foe.
“We’ve made some changes to the offense and they’re working right now. The way we’re playing makes me excited about the rest of the season,” Breanne Cunningham said.
Other standouts included Danijela Jovanovic who scored 10 points while pulling three rebounds and senior forward Courtney Fitzpatrick is beginning to come on strong with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sophomore Katie Adams had seven points and seven rebounds in the win as well.
The Scorpions easily won, but what wasn’t as easy was getting up early the next morning on Saturday, Jan. 5, and leaving at 8:30 a.m. to enjoy a five-hour bus ride to River Valley High.
“It’s a tough road trip every time we make it, but it’s especially hard after a game the night before,” Cunningham said.
River Valley, which is located near Laughlin, Nev., didn’t stand a chance however against the Scorpions as they got off the bus ready to play.
Sedona took a 28-10 lead at halftime and three players scored in double figures as the Scorpions outscored River Valley 34-20 in the second half for a 62-30 victory.
“Everyone on this team brings something to the table and it’s finally beginning to show in victories,” Adams said.
Adams had 14 points in the post and pulled down five rebounds while creating two steals.
Cunningham had 18 points while recording five rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The third amigo, Fitzpatrick, scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, five steals and one assist.
“We’re playing well together right now. We are playing as a team,” Fitzpatrick said.
Cunningham believes these three are the key to the Scorpions’ offensive success this year on the basketball court.
“Those three girls understand what were trying to do on offense and we look to them to score our points,” Cunningham said.
They looked to continue their winning ways against South Pointe High on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Results were not available at press time.
Next up, Sedona will play host to 3A-West rival Chino Valley High on Thursday, Jan. 10.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
