Herbalist Diane Dearmore says plants are her passion.
Every Tuesday morning, she takes a small group of hikers out to teach them about local herbs and plants.
The Verde Valley’s diverse landscape contains many natural medicines and home remedies, according to Dearmore.
Many indigenous plants, such as juniper, manzanita, osha, artemisia, Mormon’s tea and prickly pear, have been used as medicines for centuries, and Dearmore points out all of the above and more during her weekly herb walks.
Of course, many people purchase herbal remedies and extracts from stores, but according to Dearmore, those are much less effective than the real thing.
The symbiotic relationships between the constituents of certain plants are destroyed when specific ingredients are extracted and isolated, Dearmore said.
Join Dearmore for her herb walks every Tuesday. Groups leave from the Institute of Ecotourism at Los Abrigados Resort & Spa at 10 a.m.
