Hwy. 89A in Oak Creek Canyon is now open1 min read

Hwy. 89A in Oak Creek Canyon is now open after being closed overnight due to heavy rain.

Sedona Fire District Fire Chief Matt Shobert said at 2:45 p.m. the highway had been reopened to through traffic.

Officials closed Hwy. 89A due to rock slides, mud slides and streaming water across the roadway Sunday, Jan. 27, at 9 p.m, according to Rod Wigman, public information officer for the Arizona Department of Transportation.

“Due to the low volume of traffic on Sunday evenings, we weren’t going to close the canyon. However, last night a boulder the size of a car came down near the bottom of the switchbacks, and so, we decided to close the road,” Wigman said.

The road was closed from milepost 375 just north of Sedona to milepost 397 near Forest Highlands at the top of the canyon.
