VVCC will sign and Encroachment Permit with the Arizona Department of Transportation, agreeing to provide three years of funds for regular maintenance of Hwy. 179 shoulders, according to a press release.
Before VVCC stepped in, ADOT planned to stripe bike lanes on Hwy. 179 from the Hwy. 89A intersection to the end of city limits in conjunction with the Hwy. 179 Improvement Project, but not continue the lanes to the Village of Oak Creek.
The city took responsibility for the first section but not the remaining highway because it is outside city limits.
Until VVCC stepped up, ADOT didn’t have any organization willing to take care of the bike lanes outside city limits.
