Hwy. 179 construction continues2 min read

The Hwy. 179 Improvement Project’s Project 2 construction continues within Sedona city limits as crews in the Village of Oak Creek put finishing touches on Project 1.

Village of Oak Creek update

Final preparations are wrapping up to switch two-way traffic to the new alignment in the forest.

This week, the new irrigation system will be installed where the salvaged trees have been replanted.

Once traffic is switched, the existing alignment will be reconstructed. Upon completion, northbound traffic will be separated from southbound traffic, each traveling on its own alignment.

Paving operations are ongoing in the Village depending on weather, and the roadway is nearing completion.

In early summer, a layer of rubberized asphalt will be laid on top of the new pavement. This 1/2-inch layer is more temperature sensitive than regular pavement.

High visibility crosswalks have been installed at Cortez Drive to encourage pedestrians to use the crosswalks. This was done because many pedestrians were crossing through the middle of the roundabout instead of the designated crosswalks.

Sedona update

A total of three box culverts and one retaining wall are under construction simultaneously. This week, a new box culvert will be started in the area of Morgan Wash.

This week, the new post office driveway near the ‘Y’ intersection will be complete. Watch for postcards illustrating the revised access.

Arizona Department of Transportation representatives will visit businesses to inform them of work beginning between Ranger Road and the ‘Y’ intersection on Monday, March 31.

A storm drain will be laid from the ‘Y’ intersection to Ranger Road on the west side of the road, starting at the ‘Y’ intersection and working south.

The installation of the storm drain from start to finish should take approximately one month.

After that is completed, crews will move on to dirt work, building the grade and paving, after which they will start work in the roundabout at the ‘Y’ intersection.
