The Sedona Juniors baseball team destroyed another team Tuesday, May 27, improving its record to a spotless 5-0 this season.
The victim in this plethora of runs scored against this time would be the Cottonwood Reds as Sedona went on to score 19 runs in the first inning and 16 in the second inning to win the game 35-0.
“I think this is the first time we really squared the opposing pitcher up. There wasn’t a cheap hit to be seen in this game,” Sedona head coach Rob Henry said.
Despite Henry’s modest opinion of his own ball club, Sedona has gone on to out-score its opponents 87-9 in five games, posting the 5-0 record.
Sedona has beaten the Dewey Dodgers [23-1], the Camp Verde Astros [5-1], Bradshaw Mountain [10-7], the Cottonwood Phillies [14-0] and now the Reds [35-0].
Henry believes his team is just as strong as the one last season, which won the regional title, but in a different way.
“Our pitching is much stronger this season. Our offense may not be as strong as last season, but they’re coming along,” Henry said.
In the top of the first inning, starting pitcher J.R. Henry took the bump for Sedona without a care in the world, and why would he be worried, his offense can’t go wrong so far this season.
After shutting the Reds down 1-2-3, the Sedona offense took over in the bottom of the second inning and sent 25 batters to the plate, or almost batting around three whole times.
“We couldn’t get a put-out if we tried. I was telling my guys to hit it at someone and they did but it was line drives; they really squared it up,” Rob Henry said.
Once the 25 batters had their say, or two touchdowns, a field goal and a safety later, it was 19-0.
J.R. Henry went out to pitch the second inning as well and did just the same, ending his day with two innings pitched while not allowing a run or a hit while striking out six batters.
In the bottom of the second inning, Sedona sent 21 players to the plate and this time they “only” got 16 runs, making it a 35-0 game.
Is this a record?
Arley Leyva took the hill for Sedona in the third inning and didn’t allow a hit or a run while striking out two batters to end the game.
The score might have been worse if the umpire didn’t call it because of the two-hour time limit as Sedona did not bat in the bottom of the third.
Standouts included many players on the team so don’t hold your breath while reading the next few sentences, it may take awhile.
 Sedona baseman Javier Fimbres was 4-5 at the dish with a triple, five runs scored and six runs batted in.
 Center fielder Jack Johnson was 5-5 at the plate against the Reds scoring five runs while recording eight runs batted in.
 Left fielder Andre Villalobos couldn’t help himself either by going 4-4 with a double, four runs batted in and three runs scored.
 Shortstop Tyler Hollmann was only 2-2, but drew three walks and scored five times.
 Henry did OK at the plate as well, going 3-4 with four runs scored and one run batted in.
 Finally, right fielder Seth Giorgianni was 3-4 with two runs scored.
“These kids are good ball players and I like our chances to repeat what we did last season,” Rob Henry said.
With a team overall batting average of .409, which doesn’t include the game against the Reds, the Sedona pitching staff has been brilliant as well.
Coming into the Reds game, Sedona allowed only nine earned runs to score in 23 innings pitched while striking out 34 batters and only walking 15.
Although Sedona may be 5-0, Henry says the league may be a little bit weaker then last season but he believes when they do see a good team, his club’s confidence will be sky high.
Sedona may see that good team come Friday, May 30, when they face off against the Cottonwood Marlins at Sedona Red Rock High School.
