Sedona Swim team dominates dual meet2 min read

The more often they swim, the better and better they get.

That’s what Sedona Swim team head coach Erin Estes said about her team after they dominated another meet, this time a dual competition against Kingman on Saturday, June 28.

“This meet worked in favor of our kids because we had many in the pool besides just our top swimmers. Having everyone puts us way over the top,” Estes said.

Sedona took the victory by scoring 2,916 points compared to Kingman’s 1,728 points.

A goal Estes set for her top swimmers was to hit state-qualifying times in the Sedona Community Pool this past weekend.

The reasoning behind her team’s strategy is if they hit state-qualifying times in this pool — where there are no starting blocks and it is a shorter length — the kids should have no problem qualifying for sectionals at the state meet in Chandler in mid-July.

A few kids hit their marks when it came to qualifying for state: Jacob Decker, 13, Tristan Decker, 11, and Zachary Morgan, 14.

Others qualified for regional time cuts: 12-year-old Laura Clark, 12-year-old Emma Geurts, 10-year-old Benny Guadarrama, 11-year-old Mara Leake, 13-year-old Olivia Luyckx, 14-year-old Alyssa Millar, 12-year-old Katie Millar, 10-year-old Sierra Robinson, 10-year-old Ashley Sutherland, Sierra Winters, 13, and Nicholas Morgan, 11.

“We use this Kingman meet to set us up for following meets so that we know where we are at as a team,” Estes said.

The Kingman meet was the last of the home meets for the Sedona Swim team. Other events coming up on the road should challenge these young swimmers.

On Monday, July 14, and Tuesday, July 15, Sedona travels to Kingman for another dual meet against the team they just faced.

After a brief rest, the swimmers who qualified for state travel to Chandler on Friday, July 18, through Sunday, July 20, to compete in the state meet.

Those who don’t qualify for state swim the Sedona Mile on Saturday, July 19, in Sedona.

Sedona travels to Cottonwood tor wrap up the season at the Verde Valley Championships on Saturday, Aug. 2.
