Voters in Yavapai and Coconino counties generally followed the lead of statewide voters during the 2008 general election, with a few notable exceptions. Unlike most other areas of the state, Sen. Barack Obama (D.-Ill.) won Coconino County by 8,000 votes. In Yavapai County, however, the Democrat lost by a margin of nearly two to one. He fell several hundred thousand votes short statewide.
Most Yavapai County offices were uncontested. Incumbents retained their seats for another term, including Yavapai County Sheriff Steve Waugh, Yavapai CountyAttorney Sheila Polk and Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor Chip Davis.
The ballot issue asking voters to approve an increase in sales tax to maintain Yavapai County jails failed 47,078 to 36,456, despite the public relations efforts of the jail district. That means the jail probably won’t be housing as many illegal immigrants and non-violent offenders in the future because it just won’t have the funds to do it.
