After a good effort against a much stronger Desert Edge High School team in a 48-38 loss, the Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball rebounded to win against Parker High School, 61-30.

The Yvonne Johnson Memorial Shootout in Camp Verde began Monday, Dec. 28, for the Scorpions with hopes of going 4-0 and winning the tournament championship.

Unlike the Winslow Winter Classic just 10 days ago, the field in Camp Verde isn’t nearly as strong.

“We had a chance to win this tournament if we came to play, and played well, but it took us a bit to get going against Desert Edge and it cost us,” first-year Sedona Head Coach C.J. Sells said.

Sedona struggled from the field against Desert Edge, who is one of the only other schools with a mascot called the “Scorpions” in Arizona, shooting 31 percent.

Senior Katie Adams scored 23 points and pulled 15 rebounds but no other Scorpion scored more than four points in the loss.

The Scorpions trailed 19-17 at halftime but Desert Edge used a 29-21 second half to go on to victory.

In game two Monday, Sedona faced off against a 3A-West region foe in Parker, someone they might see come region tournament time in February.

The starters for Sedona struggled out of the gate, and trailed 4-2, before Sells made his way down the bench to pick five new players to go in and get the job done.

A message was clearly being sent by the coach and Sedona’s backups came in and did a nice job, outscoring Parker 7-2 to give Sedona a 9-6 lead at the end of one.

Message received.

In the second quarter, the starters returned from the doghouse at the end of the bench at Camp Verde Middle School to outscore the Broncs 23-6 and take a 32-12 lead at halftime.

The rout was on from there as Sedona outscored Parker 17-11 in the third quarter and 12-7 in the fourth to win, 61-30.

Adams again was spectacular, scoring 20 points while grabbing 15 rebounds and adding six blocked shots and four steals.

Senior point guard Rita Clancy had 18 points on 7-16 shooting while recording seven steals and four assists.

Freshman center Tiana Hatler-Stefick also played well, scoring nine points and recording 10 rebounds.

With the victory, Sedona improved to 5-5 overall on the season and was in action on day two of the tournament Tuesday, Dec. 29. Results were unavailable at press time.
