It seems the Big Park Community School volleyball team is destined not to lose a match this season, getting another victory Thursday, Sept. 23, this time surviving a scare over crosstown rival West Sedona School, 2-1.
To their credit, the Wildcats managed to steal the first game from Big Park, making the Coyotes sweat it out on their home turf, 25-23.
It is the first game the Coyotes have lost all season in the best-of-three format. First-year Big Park Head Coach Kerry Burkhart said she saw this coming from the beginning.
“I’m never surprised on how West Sedona plays. They are a rival and anything can happen,” an elated Burkhart said after the match Thursday.
In game one, Big Park led 12-8 before West Sedona called a timeout and responded with a 17-11 run to win the game and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
In game two, a motivated Big Park team led by Samantha Burkhart, who had nine kills, six ace serves and two assists, defeated the Wildcats, 25-17.
Jillian Ziebellz was the top passer Thursday, recording nine assists and four digs to go along with six ace serves.
Hannah Johnson had five ace serves while McKenna Woodford had three kills, one assist, one dig and seven ace serves.
In game three with the series tied 1-1, Big Park flexed its muscle to defeat West Sedona, 15-2, taking the match, 2-1.
West Sedona played outstanding volleyball, recording 10 kills to go along with nine team ace serves. The Wildcats were led by the solid play of Morgan Andrews, Kierya Shelley and Jasmine Geurts.
With the Coyotes halfway through the 2010 schedule, Big Park sports a perfect 7-0 record after defeating Oak Creek School on Monday, Sept. 27, 2-0.
Next up, Big Park is scheduled to play host to Camp Verde Middle School on Thursday, Sept. 30, with an official start time of 5 p.m.
For the Wildcats, West Sedona is scheduled to play Oak Creek on Thursday, Sept. 30, with a start time of 5 p.m.
