Ty Langmack, patrol officer for the city of Sedona, performs a number of duties each day, ranging from traffic enforcement to dealing with barking dogs and everything in between.
Langmack is the youngest member of the Sedona Police Department. Now 23, he worked as a dispatcher for two years before becoming a police officer. He’s worked as a patrolman for the last year and a half. Langmack said he’s wanted to be a police officer since high school.
“It was interesting. I did a bunch of ride-alongs when I was in high school. That sort of got me into it,” Langmack said. “I like helping people with their problems. I’m a people person, so I like walking around in Uptown and talking with store employees, making sure everything is OK, and seeing how their day is going. It’s not my beat, but I try to get up there at least once a week.”
Langmack currently works the day shift for the department.
Besides being the youngest officer on the force, Langmack is also one of very few police officers born and raised in Sedona. As a teenager, Langmack attended classes at Sedona Red Rock High School. He still enjoys working with students when he’s able to. Meeting people who visit Sedona, from locations spanning the globe, also counts among his interests.
“Everybody from different countries does things a little different. You can go on one traffic stop and go on a different traffic stop and it’s completely different, even if it’s for the same violation,” Langmack said.
He said he plans to stay at the Sedona Police Department for as long as he can.
“I’m still young in my career, so there are still opportunities and avenues I can go to. School resource officer would be fun. I like talking to the kids and building their trust, giving them someone to look up to, and they don’t have a problem talking to me. We’re friends,” Langmack said.
As a lifelong resident, Langmack said he knows a lot of residents in the community, which can occasionally make his job easier.
“It can also make it more difficult at the same time,” Langmack said.
His other interests include snowboarding, motorcycle riding and traveling abroad. Langmack has visited Australia, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Nicaragua over the years.
“I love Australia; there’s just something about it. I’d love to go back there,” Langmack said. “I went to Australia and Canada on the same trip and they were two completely different places. They were both awesome. Everybody was super friendly in both places. The food is good. In Australia, you can’t beat the beach.”
Cmdr. Ron Wheeler said he was pleased to have a Sedona native on the police force.
“This is really exciting for us, because we have a homegrown kid working for us now. It’s been a long time since we’ve had that,” Wheeler said. “[Langmack] started off in dispatch and he’s moving on, growing into one of our finest young officers. I’m very proud of him and look forward to great things in the future.”
