So many screens, so little time6 min read

Are we setting ourselves up to be virtual people, to be the computers one day, only requiring quarterly service calls by the virtual computer guy. Even now my real compuguy can virtually service my computers no matter the real distance, with the password he set up for us. Will it be one big virtual reality show soon?

When do we turn our heads from being buried in all the screens?  There’s so much on the web; (yes, I know, even my blog), and the TV screen with all its media too, videos, games, also on phone screens. All the texts, email, reminders, photos, not to mention advertisements, and facetime; plus screens just made for reading books, etc. Businesses are called ‘down’ when the computer screens aren’t functioning. Should we be concerned? It’s all so virtual.

With a DVR we think we’re missing the commercials, but they register no matter what speed they go by on fast forward. I don’t mind missing out on those virtually ridiculous TV ads for the latest pharmaceutical drug, which spends most of its broadcast time cautioning us that it may cause a stroke, heart attack or death, but it can help snoring (or whatever lesser issue), so ask your doc for it. Are we so virtually overwhelmed with our heads buried, that we really don’t realize how crazy that is?

Obviously screens are taking over. We eat our meals and snack without paying attention, in front of our screens. When I trained with TV’s Neilsen rating service, we were told the Neilsen box’s screen could see and identify everyone watching the TV screen, which made me wonder/ponder.

Will a book still have to be distributed with paper pages first, to get on a screen in the future or will that be skipped? So far I’m still getting mine from the library, seeing real people there and turning real pages too. I like the feel of paper. And real touch; hugs and kisses. With skype and the I-phone facetime we can virtually see each other but is it real?

It’s real time and it’s really us, but I can’t cozy up and put my head on anyone’s shoulder, or feel the heat; body heat. Where is that leading us? To a cold, detached world? And too worn out from eye strain or out of breath because we never move our bodies to step away from the screen; thereby too depleted to make babies?

Wait. Maybe we can create them by inputting information about ourselves online, scan in our birth certificate and drivers’ license for proof that we exist, are old enough to have a baby, and then get an email reply, when to pick up our bundle of joy from the fetal print shop on the web. And hire a virtual nanny while we sit longer and closer to the screen, until we virtually merge with it.

Don’t get me wrong. I like all this stuff. It’s great to have so much available at the touch of a touchscreen. And I adore movies, whether on home or theatre screens, especially Sedona the Movie.  But I love really going to live classes, gatherings, concerts, musicals, plays, shows; I even perform in them, and I’ve attended many live TV shows. I really appreciated getting real letters in my real mailbox. I’m going to make real time and effort to balance a real in-person life as well as be buried in screens. Instead of exercising alone to a virtual DVD on a TV screen, I really did aerobics in real water with real people.

I actually like to send paper note cards that I’ve picked out in the real store, get real stamps from the real post office, put in a real envelope and real mail box so that those dear to me can have the delight of actually getting an old-fashioned feeling that they must really have great value to me, that I would make all of the physical effort with them in mind.

You can put it on your mantle shelf above the screen, like real (or virtual) flowers, and gaze at it from time to time, being reminded of your worth to real people. Sure e-cards are nice, and it’s the thought that counts, but I got both from a friend for my birthday, and the real paper birthday card in my mailbox brought with it a real feeling of being loved.

It is the twenty-first century, and I’m virtually jumping on the virtual wagon, so, yes, I admit, it means a lot to see a comment from you on my virtual blog, on the virtual web, on the virtual red rock news, or on my virtual facebook or twitter page, or even my virtual email box.

I’ve been asked to sit for a new video production about myself and my spiritual service, so this afternoon I will be in front of a green screen and it will eventually be shown on a metaphysical website as well as youtube. Screens do give us a farther and wider reach. Like anything, balance is healthy.  I’ve got to run in a minute and get ready for the video shoot…so much media, so little time. I hope all my i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed here. Oh, no worries, the virtual computer takes care of that. How nice.

I’m melting into the screen. Wait, I do feel the heat. Is it body heat? No, it’s my laptop and I don’t think (it’s) feeling love. That would be really scary. I need to turn (it) off and let (it) cool down. (It), too, has been virtually handling just about as much as (it) was built to handle in time.

It? Should I give ’it’ a name? That may virtually be where I really need to draw the line. I think we (we?) both need a break. Wait. They come delivered with names! Maybe Samsung does appreciate that I let it rest, clean it, give it check ups, and a good home. After all, everything is energy, from one source…Nice Sammy, everything’s great…just relax.
