While working gardens aren’t always pretty to look at, they perform a necessary function.

Harry Gold, a retired homeowner in the Village of Oak Creek, grows a number of vegetables in his backyard. Gold’s home is located on a half-acre of property. Gold and his son, Craig, operate a 200-square-foot greenhouse there, called a “hoophouse” and made from PVC pipe and screen material. Inside, he grows tomatoes, basil, herbs, lettuce and more.

Recently, Gold’s hoophouse came under fire from the Village of Oakcreek Association, which Gold is a member of — a requirement for homeowners in his neighborhood.

“In the winter it keeps it warm. In the summer it comes off,” Gold said. “My son helps me take care of it. We’re growing all kinds of vegetables to sustain us throughout the year.”
