Hannah Larson felt a little embarrassed as her teacher handed out journalism awards from a recent statewide contest.

Larson, a sophomore at Sedona Red Rock High School, is on the staff of The Sting, the school’s newspaper. She won five awards for her work on the paper in the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association’s spring newspaper contest.

“Ms. “[Maureen] Barton had me just stand rather than get up every time she gave out one of the awards,” said Larson — no relation to Larson Newspapers. “When she told us who the winners were, I thought, ‘Oh, OK.’ Then she handed them out. I couldn’t believe I won so many awards. I was excited, especially to win two firsts and three honorable mentions.”

Larson won Excellent, first place, for her Pro/Con Editorial with Mallory Lamparter and Entertainment Page Spread. She received Honorable Mention awards for News/Feature In-Depth Reporting, News Page and Feature Page.
