At 93 years young, VOC man records his 13th hole-in-one1 min read

“Boots” Claunts has recorded 13 holes-in-one in the 70-plus years he’s been playing the game. His first came at a golf course in Casa Grande in 1989 and just recently, he hit his 13th at a golf course in the Village of Oak Creek. The 93-year-old says he attributes his good health to clean living and says some golfers play a lifetime and don’t ever ace a hole.

“Boots” Claunts hit his 13th hole-in-one, and if that isn’t amazing enough, he is 93 years old.

“Thirteen is an unlucky number for most people,” Claunts said. “It’s lucky for me.”

On the morning of June 15, Boots was up early and at the golf course, just like the other five days he golfs. He met up with his buddies, the Dollar Gang, who are a group of golfers who scramble six days a week. And Claunts has no trouble keeping up with them.

“He is 93, and he is out here six days a week,” said Jeff Watts, director of golf at the Sedona golf course where Claunts hit his latest hole-in-one. “And he is still hitting hole-in-ones.”

Claunts started playing golf when he was 16 years old.

“I grew up in Oklahoma. There was not much to do there,” Claunts said. “So I started golfing for fun.”

Years of experience and practice aren’t the only things he has to show for it. The 13 hole-in-ones he has under his belt is something most golfers only dream about.
