Sometimes a relationship just clicks right from the beginning like it did with Jerry Showalter and Spencer, his little brother through Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“Our relationship, in the beginning, didn’t have that period needed to become comfortable with each other. We hit it off right away,” Showalter said. Spencer nodded in agreement and said Showalter was easy to get to know.

Showalter and Spencer became a big/little match three years ago. It is the first time for both of them.

Spencer is 14 years old and will start as a freshman at Sedona Red Rock High School in August.

“Freshmeat is what they call us,” Spencer said, referring to the teasing some freshmen receive. He lives with his grandmother, Hope Marquez, who told YBBBS Spencer needed a man in his life to show him responsibility, how to succeed and to be a “big brother” influence in his life.
