The lights could be turned on by the end of the month.
The hotly debated street lights along State Route 89A may be activated by the end of September, according to an Aug. 30 Arizona Department of Transportation press release.
The Monterey-style poles, as well as activation of the traffic signal at Andante Drive, are expected soon as the summer roadway improvement project nears completion.
Continued installation of 108 streetlights, from Dry Creek Road to Airport Road, may require lane closures as crews work to finish the project. Drivers are asked to observe the posted speed limits and allow extra time on State Route 89A during the course of the work. Crews installed the Andante Drive traffic signal in early September as part of the same roadway improvement project. Lane closures are also expected while crews install video cameras at intersections along State Route 89A. Those cameras, according to ADOT, will be used to sense vehicles waiting at various intersections in an effort to fine-tune timing of the lights.
Assistant Public Works Director Andy Dickey said permanent roadway striping will be completed by ADOT crews this week. That work will be performed at night, Dickey said. City staff, he added, continues to coordinate with ADOT and its contractors on the project.
