In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Sedona Public Library has featured talks on immigration reform, the Day of the Dead celebration and more in store.

Latino Services Librarian Marcela Saldivia said a planned Friday, Oct. 5, immigration rights meeting was recently canceled by immigration lawyer Ezequiel Hernandez, but will be rescheduled for a later date. The meeting was part of a series of talks focusing on the rights of undocumented immigrants.

“The meeting will help undocumented people and documented people,” Saldivia said. “It’s a very tough issue, and there are many sides of it. The reality we see here is there are a lot of very hardworking people that come here for the many opportunities America is supposed to represent, especially for their children. They want a better opportunity for their children. That’s what they’re looking at, for the next generation.”

Other meetings will focus on Senate Bill 1070, an immigration law, and law enforcement, she added.

“We are doing more immigration-related events to inform the Hispanic community about what’s going on with deferred action and Senate Bill 1070,” Saldivia said.

In October, Saldivia erects an altar for the Day of the Dead celebration as well. The display will be up through Saturday, Nov. 3.
