Pattie Hodel and Penny Goodman have something in common this time of year. They are two of several local artists preparing items for the Sedona Heritage Museum’s annual Fall Arts and Crafts Fair and Bake Sale.

Hodel spends nearly all day lately in her garage, or rather pottery studio, creating clay pieces from tree ornaments to large platters. Everything is serviceable.

“I use strictly lead-free clay. You can eat out off them and you can put them in the microwave. They’re dishwasher-proof and oven-proof, but not drop-proof,” Hodel said and laughed.

This is Hodel’s fifth year to participate in the fair, and she likes to help the museum when she can.

“I know the people there, and the fair is fun and kind of a social event. You get to meet other artists and crafters, and the people who come to it.”

Hodel has made pottery for about 25 years. Pottery and her other artistic endeavors are all a hobby for her, she said.

“I give away a lot as gifts,” she said. “I love doing this whether I’m throwing clay, pressing, molding or hand building with clay. I like the creative process of it.”
