A Day in the West won the big title — again.

Out of 10 teams that competed this year, A Day in the West softball team claimed the 2012 Sedona Adult Summer Softball League championship in the beginning of October.

Winning titles isn’t anything new, however, to A Day in the West team. It has won the last nine out of 10 championships, losing the title only once four years ago.

The team ended the regular season with a 14-4 record and went undefeated in the championship tournament, 3-0.

“This group of guys dedicates a lot of time, plays hard and has fun a lot,” team captain Pedro Ortega Sr. said. “There were good teams this year. We had to put in a lot of effort for the championship. It was very competitive.”

In the first round of the championship tournament, No. 3-seeded A Day in the West was pitted No. 6-seeded Team Red Rock. A Day in the West beat Team Red Rock 16-2 in the 2011 championship title game.

In a close, high-paced match, the A Day in the West players stole the victory 15-10, moving them to round two of the tournament.

A Day in the West was given the win in the semifinals on a forfeit by No. 2-seeded Team JMC due to not enough players showing. This advanced A Day in the West to the final round to compete for the title.

The team faced No. 4-seeded Red Rocks Rotary.

Red Rocks Rotary beat the UPS Store 4-3 in the first round and won on a forfeit against No. 1-seeded Rough Country to get to the championship.
