Dilks organizes card campaign for residents of Newtown, Conn.1 min read

Karen Dilks, left, shares a moment with her grandson, Gavin. She organized an event for Saturday, Jan. 12, to have people come to different locations around Sedona and Cottonwood to sign cards she will send to families and residents in Newtown, Conn. Her grandson is a big reason why Dilks wanted to have the community send messages of comfort. The victims of the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown were his age.

When the Newtown, Conn., shooting came onto Karen Dilks’ television screen the morning of Dec. 14, she was horrified, and decided to take action. Since the tragedy, Dilks has organized a card signing event to send sympathy, love and good wishes from one small town to another, as she puts it.

“My heart, like everyone’s, was broken. It still is. Such innocent children, their families and the whole community rocked to the very core of existence in a tragedy beyond comprehension. I cannot imagine how someone could shoot and kill a child,” Dilks said. “We need to send our love, hope, strength and prayers their way.”

On Dec. 14, 20-year-old Adam Lanza allegedly shot and killed his mother, and then went to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and opened fire in two classrooms, killing 20 children ages 6 and 7, and six adults.
