If your New Year resolutions didn’t get resolved yet, or even begun; if they got off to a false start, there’s always today or tomorrow or tomorrow or tomorrow. We get second chances. If at first we don’t succeed, you know we’ve been told to try, try, again.
It’s the second week of the new year. We’ve all likely gotten a second chance at something. And maybe you’ve given something or someone a second chance, or third or hundredth. It doesn’t always work out, but we give it the old college try.
“They’ say we should live in the moment; don’t look back. Let’s tweak that to not living in the past, but realizing the difference between turning the head to take a look behind us for review, in contrast to living with our head turned around all the time while we could be going forward. How can we move ahead when we’re not looking at the path in front of us, but rather stopped in our tracks, focusing on what’s behind?
Instead of saying, ‘I’ve done this before; this is how it always happens,’ will you please leave room for the new now moment? This is a different time and we have new revelations. For instance, I have worked the most famous weight watching program before, several times; all relatively successfully, except that most of the time when I stopped at a certain number it was for different reasons, and generally let the weight return because of varying mindsets.
One time, on my way into a meeting I overheard a woman tell her friend that people always gain their weight back. My consciousness then, believed it and guess what. Another time I reached a weight that changed my entire look; I was not covering my body with layers or big loose clothing any longer, but was tucking clothes in! I felt wonderful in every way and my eating patterns had settled in to keep me at that weight for several years.
Then I relocated across the country and began my own business. I let someone in who was banging down my door to become friends with me, and began mindlessly copying her eating habits. Her blatant negativity also became apparent and ultimately I chose to wean away from her. At the point where half the weight was returning, I went back to my favorite eating program and meetings. Half of that weight was shed, then for some reason I stopped there. I have begun again and am noticing the differences in my mindset.
On program, I always eat more fruit and vegetables which I relish, and enjoy what I eat, including allowing myself to have long-standing favorites, just not as often. I have done all this in the past while on program, yet now I have a personal coach to work with me on the psychological programming to keep it going. That is what I would suggest for us all. Whether a friend or coach, make at least a weekly conversation all about You, for at least an hour.
I know one person who has been attempting to end a popular social addiction and repeatedly says it will be as difficult as every other time he did it. He listens more to people who agree with him than those that say it wasn’t hard. I know others who have had no problem at all. Is he setting himself up for difficulty, and is that one of the reasons he puts off starting, week after week, month after month, now over a year? Do we need help to focus on the positives of the end result rather than list potential issues?
Is it possible we live our lives without realizing that we absorb others’ habits and attitudes? Would it be beneficial to carefully choose who we listen to or spend time with? We can enhance our life and experiences by selecting who we let into and keep in our lives. In some circumstances if that is not possible, look deeper to see why, and are we taking full responsibility of our lives within our whole capacities?
Or are we leaning on others when we don’t truly need to, if we would just stand up, dust ourselves off and believe in ourselves? In situations that you truly deem impossible to change, change yourself. Perhaps it’s frustrating that the other won’t open to your beliefs or that their mindsets challenge your sense of peace. That other person doesn’t need to be your only world. Spend more time with your own breathing space, and with other people, improving yourself. Expand your world.
No man is an island. It takes at least two; you and a second person…whether you are reading an author, watching a TV documentary created by others, taking a class taught by a teacher, interacting with other students, consulting with a professional, or attending a positive and/or spiritual gathering. Say hello to someone and be open to sharing yourself with their goodness. If you find they aren’t truly positive, rather than get addicted, will you wean time from that person with an attitude? Perhaps meditate to spend more time with yourself and what I call God.
Give yourself a second chance. It doesn’t matter the age, weight, gender, sexual preference, religion, family circumstance, living circumstance. Look deeper than superficially for the psychological reasons and thoughts that take us to the same past stories; beliefs, discouragements, hurts and blocks. Remember everything is energy and know that positives have just as much power as you gave negatives, then walk forward into your good.
If not today, tomorrow then. But live today for today, turn your head around so your head is on straight and look forward. If you’ve been going backwards, take a second look at what has always been ahead of you to see that path forward is still under your feet waiting for your movement. One step at a time, surround yourself with what and who, is good for you.
