Everyday People5 min read

One of the things I have come to look forward to more than ever, is meeting new people. It’s great to see the same friends, because they know us well and we can rely on enjoying time with them. It’s great when we have wonderful family members because they know us the longest, the best and always have our back. In truth, family and friends can only do the best they know how, considering their own emotional baggage. It’s God that has our back.

There’s an inner thought many of us share when young; not wanting to achieve more than our parents, even if they encourage us. Maybe we don’t believe we can, anyway; but if we do think bigger, there is that deeper fear of making a parent feel humiliated about their place in life, when we always want them to know there is hardly anything they can do to fall off that pedestal we have them on.

That statement, right there, is huge because how many of us know of parents that left, or were cruel to their kids yet the confused children have a hard time not loving them? We can all meet new people that feel like kind parents to us, and spend time under their wing.

Friends may not always live in the same town, or may not always grow at the same speed as each other, or if we go deeper, we may not allow ourselves to grow just because we don’t want to lose that friend, or pack of friends, so we may stay in the same less mature habits such as getting drunk with them, smoking cigarettes or a joint together, maybe complaining about everything, or laughing at the same joke for the ten thousandth time.

I’m fortunate to have a wonderful family as well as bright, mature, young-at-heart, positive friends, locally, with integrity, who love to learn and grow; in fact thrive on stretching and seeing new places. We, too, double over in laughter, but without anesthetizing ourselves.

I am still in touch with old cherished friends though we live in different places, and even touch base, now and then, with one or two who linger in the same habits and mindset of 20 years ago when they were in their tune-out and turn-on twenties, and currently aren’t creating much life for themselves. I notice that we have little in common, and communication can be short, or long on their complaining.

It’s wise to look at our everyday people and ourselves to notice if we are following our dreams or staying in the old nest for the sake of feeling secure with what we are used to. Is there a fear of meeting new people or living in new places? Do we think we can’t make it, be as well-liked, or that God won’t support us if we fly the coop, believing we always have to rely on others?

Birds have an instinct to fly from the nest when young. Were humans really made to live in our childhood nest forever? How will we know if our dreams will be fulfilled if we don’t step outside of the box we boxed ourselves in to?

We were born with a honing device to sense things. Maybe I can compare meeting good new people to tasting new varieties of chocolate. Most people are so nice and have interesting personalities, flavors, and interests. If you sense the opposite, they’re not meant for your every day.

It’s like stepping into a new and different world just by having a conversation with a person that used to be a stranger. Start there. Maybe they share an interest and it will get you out of the box to start up a hobby you’ve always been curious about. Move away from the TV and begin to practice for the career dream you have. You may meet new people that are a connecting link to get you there.

God exhibits through people and if you have faith and take a step, that vision will likely be rewarded with what you expect. In fact before coming to Sedona years ago, I looked around on the internet and saw some faces that moved my heart and soul, seeming like wonderful people whom I would be glad to know. As God acted on my faithful expectations of coming here, it turned out that they were some of the very first people that popped into my life, felt like family and are still dear friends!

God made many people and many places. Are you ready to follow your dreams? Why did God even give us dreams, if not to desire them? If you desire them, are you really meant to ignore them? New vistas might take your breath away and expand your heartspace. Kindle the fire of your creativity or passion.

If we think we have one life to live, how about believing in yourself like God does, create a nest egg and use some of it for widening your horizons. Use your honing device to get you where you belong. You will meet amazing people that may be the connection to your dream for your new everyday life, a life that only you can allow to expand, blossom and bless you.

Remember, at one time, where you are and who you know, were all strange to you initially. We were born into a strange new world, seeing strange new faces. Does it end there? In essence, waking from sleep we are reborn every day. There are no strangers; only people we haven’t met yet. Everyday people. I would love to befriend You, stranger!
