Two Big Park Community School basketball players won the Northern Arizona Elks Hoop Shoot district competition, but only one represented Sedona in the state finals.

After winning the first competition at West Sedona School, seventh-grader Liza Westervelt and sixth-grader Chase Sacalzski both won the Northern Arizona Elks Hoop Shoot in Cottonwood on Jan. 26, and advanced to the state competition in Apache Junction on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Both Westervelt and Sacalzski shot 22 out of 25 free throws, making them two of the 24 shooters out of an initial pool of 16,000 to make it to the Arizona state finals. It’s also one of the few times two shooters from the same school were represented in the championships.
