The Scorpions track and field teams continue to achieve state-qualifying times and distances and even break school records as the state meet gets closer, but cross-valley rival Mingus Union dominated the Sedona Invitational.

With 10 schools competing in the Sedona Invitational on Tuesday, April 23, at Sedona Red Rock High School, Mingus Union placed first among the girl’s teams with 208 points, Sedona was second with 122.5 points and Camp Verde placed third with 84 points. In the boys competition, Sedona placed fourth with 88 points and Mingus Union came in second with 115 points behind Canyon State Academy which tallied 144 points.

“The weather at the end hurt us, but everything was on schedule, which is rare for a track meet,” SRRHS Head Coach Harry Schneider said. “About a week ago, we about cancelled the meet because we didn’t have enough volunteers, but people stepped up at the last minute. It’s special for a community to do that.

“The kids did very well at this meet. Even the kids who got beat did well.”

Senior Shayla Jones had a great day, breaking two school records. With a state-qualifying time of 26.63 seconds, Jones shattered the 10-year school record in the 200-meter dash, although she placed second in the event. Jones won the 300-meter hurdles with the school record and state qualifying time of 47.34 seconds, beating her biggest rival Amanda Showers of Camp Verde.
