The middle school baseball and softball teams played in the championship tournaments last weekend, and while Big Park Community School and West Sedona School each played well, only one team got close to the trophy.

The Big Park baseball team placed second in the Verde Valley Athletic Association Baseball tournament on Saturday, April 27, at West Sedona School after getting beat by the undefeated Camp Verde Cowboys, 4-2 in the final game.

West Sedona's Head Coach Pedro Ortega, Sr., center, talks with his pitcher, Dawson Barber, right, and catcher Evan Gritter during the game against Big Park. The Wildcats took third. The Big Park Coyotes shut out the West Sedona Wildcats 15-0 in a semifinal game to advance to the finals. The Coyotes scored easily against the Wildcats, who struggled to get any kind of offense going against Big Park’s hard-throwing pitcher Randy Rodriguez.

“It was a great experience for our West Sedona team playing tournament baseball,” West Sedona Head Coach Pedro Ortega Sr. said. “They learned a lot from it and played with energy and passion. I am proud of all our kids for their efforts, dedication and good sportsmanship through the whole season and also helping with our tournament. We had a great time.”

Just like last year, the Coyotes faced the Cowboys in the championship game, and it was a pitchers dual as Ryan Cain of the Cowboys and Rodriguez of the Coyotes were both on fire.
