Bonny Smith sits in her classroom at Big Park Community Sedona School on Thursday, April 25. Smith is one of three finalists for the Yavapai County Teacher of the Year award in the fourth- through eighth-grade category. The awards honor teachers in public, charter, and private schools who are nominated by administrators and school leaders.

Big Park Community School sixth grade teacher Bonny Smith has been named as a finalist in the 19th annual Yavapai County Teacher of the Year Awards.

Smith, originally from Canada, has been teaching for 24 years, with many of those years abroad in countries like El Salvador and Bangladesh, which gave her a unique perspective and skill set for teaching.

“I started in El Salvador. When I graduated there weren’t many jobs available in Canada, so we had an international job fair at our university, and I filled out an application,” Smith said.
