The Sedona Red Rock High School Boys Tennis team made appearances in the team, singles and doubles brackets of the Division III state championship tournaments, but were knocked out in the early rounds.

The team’s season ended when No. 6 seed, St. Gregory of Tucson, beat the No. 11-seeded Scorpions 5-0 in the first round of the state tournament, April 23, at Thatcher High School.

Cody Chartier“St. Gregory was a difficult match-up for us,” Scorpions Head Coach Duane Edwards said. “They were just a bit better than us that day. I consider making state an accomplishment, and I believe we improved over the year, so I’m happy with the season.”

Only 16 of the 50 schools in Division III qualified for the state tournament.

Senior Cody Chartier was one of two players from Northern Arizona who made it into the 48-man singles tournament. Players from Phoenix and Tucson area schools tend to have “better” players because of they have bigger pools of talent. As a result, they usually get the recognition.
