Scorpions golf team ends season on high note1 min read

The Sedona Red Rock Scorpions golf team excelled with a handful of sophomores during its 2013 season, and ended the season with a few high notes.

The Scorpions ended their season with an impressive 19-8 dual record, and all eight losses were to teams that finished in the top 10 of the 54 schools in Division III.

Sophomore Savanah Cooper demonstrates great form while hitting a ball during a regular season meet at the Sedona Golf Resort earlier this year. Cooper ended up in 69th place out of 95 golfers at the Division III state tournament at Antelope Hills in Prescott on Saturday, May 11, shooting 83 on the first day and 91 on the second day for a total score of 174. She was the only Scorpions golfer to qualify for state this season.“The Phoenix schools tend to be where the better programs are located while we currently dominate competition in the Northern part of Arizona,” SRRHS Head Coach Dennis Mobley said. “As an example, the top five teams at state were all from the Phoenix area.

“All in all, this was an excellent season for a team frequently starting six sophomores and a freshman.”

Jasper Herrick won the season scoring average in a close three-way battle with Savanah Cooper and Skyler Richardson.

“These three went back-and-forth all season, and we are extremely fortunate to have essentially three No. 1s for the next two years.”
