The sight of a snake on a hiking trail causes most hikers to react in one of two ways. The first and most common reaction is fear and avoidance. The second and more heinous reaction is aggressiveness toward the snake, even to the point of killing it.
But according to a group of snake handlers brought in by the Red Rock Ranger District for a Live Snake Exhibition at its South Gateway Visitor Center over Memorial Day weekend, no good reason exists for either of those reactions.
“Most rattlesnakes will let you walk right past them and never even let you know they’re there,” said Russell Dunn, who owns a local business removing reptiles from residents’ yards.
